Storm Causes Flurry of Issues for Western Pa. Homeowners

Expert Warns to Watch for Ice Dams and Weak Roofs

PITTSBURGH, PA- February 11, 2010 – The fourth-largest snowfall in Western Pennsylvania history is causing a flurry of issues for homeowners across Western Pennsylvania. From ice dams to falling porch roofs, homeowners need to be aware of how to contend with snow and ice-related problems.

According to Ken Moeslein, founder and CEO of Dormont-based Legacy Remodeling, the number one issue that homeowners need to watch out for in the current weather is ice dams. This tricky situation occurs when the lower part of the snow load that is above an attic area melts and moves down the roof. As the melted snow moves over a colder area it begins to refreeze and move up the roof, lifting the shingles. When the ice reaches the area that has the heated attic below it, it will melt and can cause water to come inside the home, causing leaks and possible water damage.

Moeslein says another issue to watch out for is collapsing carports, decks, or porch roofs. “There are many systems out there that are either improperly supported or old and in need of repair,” said Moeslein. “Homeowners need to take caution and safely remove the snow before any collapsing can occur, causing injury.”

Moeslein’s number one piece of advice for homeowners? Don’t overreact. “There are many unethical contractors out there who know that people are panicked and will take advantage of them during this time,” said Moeslein. “Remove as much snow as you can safely, but after that you need to let nature take its course. Your home will most likely shift back to normal when the weather breaks. If it doesn’t, call a reputable, insured contractor.”

Legacy CEO Lends Expertise to National Conference for Home Remodeling

Ken Moeslein to contribute his knowledge in the field of window replacements

PITTSBURGH, PA- January 28, 2010- The city of Pittsburgh tends to produce great people and great businesses. One of the greats, Ken Moeslein, founder and C.E.O. of Legacy Remodeling, has been invited, once again, to serve on a panel at the esteemed Hanley Wood’s Replacement Contractor Executive Conference in Miami, Fla. this February 14-16, 2010. Legacy Remodeling is the home of Swing Line Windows, Owens Corning Basement Finishing Systems, and Owens Corning Sunsuites.

The three-day conference is an opportunity for contractors from all over the country to assemble and discuss the directions, opportunities, and challenges that face the home remodeling industry. Sales of windows have plunged from more than 70 million in 2005 to 48.4 million in 2008. While much of that was due to loss of new construction, sales in replacement windows have shrunk as well. But the forecast is optimistic considering the potential “Cash for Caulkers” program as well as other indicators of a shift within the industry. In the field of window replacement, Mr. Moeslein will be contributing his vast knowledge to a panel of discussion.

Legacy Remodeling has been a pioneer in the field of window replacement. The company was founded in 1987 by the name of Swing Line Windows. Since then, Mr. Moeslein and his multi-million dollar company have perfected exterior remodeling including siding, doors, roofing, etc. It is fitting that Mr. Moeslein be chosen to speak on this panel. His expertise and experience are undeniable.

This is not the first time Mr. Moeslein was asked to speak on a panel of discussion regarding the remodeling industry. He lent a hand last year at the same conference on the topic of energy efficient products. He was also one of three remodelers to speak at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government for a program sponsored by The Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University.

Last year, Legacy Remodeling was named the winner of the Western Pennsylvania Better Business Bureau’s prestigious Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics. The award was established by the Better Business Bureau to attain recognition from the public for businesses that have a commitment to managing their business practices ethically. The winners were selected by a panel of academic professionals chosen by the Better Business Bureau.

Local Homeowners Learn How to Pick the Best Contractor

Legacy CEO Lends Expertise to Cranberry Home Expo

PITTSBURGH, PA- September 17, 2009 – If it were up to Ken Moeslein, the hundreds of media stories each year about homeowners being swindled by unethical contractors would never exist. That’s why Moeslein will be leading a workshop for homeowners on guidelines to follow for choosing the right contractor on September 23, 2009 at 4pm at the Cranberry Home and Community Expo.

A 40-year veteran of the home remodeling industry, Moeslein is founder and CEO of Legacy Remodeling, one of the area’s largest home remodelers. Through his years of industry experience and his position on Western Pennsylvania’s Better Business Bureau, Moeslein has come across numerous scenarios in which unknowing consumers have been cheated by contractors. To help homeowners avoid this from happening to them, Moeslein has developed a set of questions that consumers should ask before anyone works on their home.

Moeslein’s workshop will discuss these questions and other tips for homeowners on how to choose the best contractor for their home improvement jobs.  “Choosing home improvement contractors can be overwhelming for consumers because they are often dealing with products that they have no experience with,” says Moeslein. “I look forward to the opportunity to share some advice on how to avoid getting scammed and getting the best job done for your money.”

This is not Moeslein’s first experience leading workshops; he was one of three remodelers to speak at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government for a program sponsored by The Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University. It was Ken’s privilege to speak to and field questions from a distinguished group of academics, manufacturers, government officials and publishers.

Having served on the Western Pennsylvania Better Business Bureau Board of Directors for the past 6 years, he has earned a reputation as both a fair and ethical businessman. In 2007 he was elected by his peers to serve as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the BBB.

If you would like more information about the workshop or would like to schedule an interview with Ken Moeslein, please contact Robert Brady at 412-341-1933 ext. 266 or email Rob at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
