Storm Causes Flurry of Issues for Western Pa. Homeowners

Expert Warns to Watch for Ice Dams and Weak Roofs

PITTSBURGH, PA- February 11, 2010 – The fourth-largest snowfall in Western Pennsylvania history is causing a flurry of issues for homeowners across Western Pennsylvania. From ice dams to falling porch roofs, homeowners need to be aware of how to contend with snow and ice-related problems.

According to Ken Moeslein, founder and CEO of Dormont-based Legacy Remodeling, the number one issue that homeowners need to watch out for in the current weather is ice dams. This tricky situation occurs when the lower part of the snow load that is above an attic area melts and moves down the roof. As the melted snow moves over a colder area it begins to refreeze and move up the roof, lifting the shingles. When the ice reaches the area that has the heated attic below it, it will melt and can cause water to come inside the home, causing leaks and possible water damage.

Moeslein says another issue to watch out for is collapsing carports, decks, or porch roofs. “There are many systems out there that are either improperly supported or old and in need of repair,” said Moeslein. “Homeowners need to take caution and safely remove the snow before any collapsing can occur, causing injury.”

Moeslein’s number one piece of advice for homeowners? Don’t overreact. “There are many unethical contractors out there who know that people are panicked and will take advantage of them during this time,” said Moeslein. “Remove as much snow as you can safely, but after that you need to let nature take its course. Your home will most likely shift back to normal when the weather breaks. If it doesn’t, call a reputable, insured contractor.”
